Communication Strategies for Every Archetype Pair

Practical communication tips for working with each archetype combination — reduce friction and increase collaboration.

The most common source of workplace friction is not disagreement about goals — it is mismatched communication styles. When an Executor and a Strategist clash, they usually want the same outcome. They just have fundamentally different approaches to getting there.

Universal Principles

  • Lead with their language, not yours. Executors want action items. Strategists want context. Absorbers want emotional acknowledgment.
  • Name the dynamic. Saying 'I know I tend to move fast and you need more time to process' reduces 80% of communication friction.
  • Ask for their input in their preferred format. Some archetypes think out loud; others need time to formulate responses.

High-Tension Pairs

Reactor + Avoider

This is often the highest-friction pair. Reactors express with intensity; Avoiders retreat from intensity. The Reactor feels unheard; the Avoider feels overwhelmed. Solution: establish a signal system where either person can call a brief pause without judgment.

Executor + Strategist

Executors want to move now; Strategists want to plan first. Both are right — the question is timing. Solution: agree on a minimum viable plan threshold. Enough strategy to aim, enough action to learn.

Absorber + Interrogator

Absorbers feel things deeply; Interrogators question directly. The Absorber may experience the Interrogator's questions as criticism. Solution: Interrogators should lead with curiosity framing ('I am wondering if...') and Absorbers should practice not personalizing analytical questions.

Absorber + Executor

Strategist + Interrogator
